Plastic Free July Challenge – Day 6

Unfortunately, most packaging is designed as single-use and is typically thrown away rather than reused or recycled. According to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), food and food packaging materials make up almost half of all municipal solid waste.

In 2014, out of the 258 million tons of municipal solid waste generated in the US, more than 63 percent was of packaging materials (for food and other purposes) and, overall, only 35 percent (89 million tons) was recycled or composted. (Source)

Not only that, a very tiny amount of plastic gets into our food by migrating from plastic containers. This migration of plastic increases when the temperature of the food is high or when the food is salty, fatty, and acidic.

You can learn more about it here!

My point here is don’t use plastic around your food. I always carry a lunch box with me whenever I head out just in case I go to eat. I can either use it to bring food home or I just use it to bring my leftovers. FYI, I’m a foodie 😅

So, are you ready to take a reusable container/ lunch box with you whenever you head out to eat?
