It’s a great time to stick with zero waste to continue it for a lifetime. If you can stick with it right now you can continue this lifestyle for the rest of your lives.

So, is that possible to be zero waste during the pandemic like coronavirus?

Yes, it is. You’re asking how? Our ancestors lived a healthy and long life by practising the same principles of zero waste. I’m not saying that our ancestors lived a disease-free life but they were healthier than us. Now keep one thing in mind, it’s better to prevent yourself from such disease like coronavirus than treating the disease. So, how do you do that?

How to prevent you from any disease by practising zero waste?

Well, by eating right, keeping your mindset healthy and by following a few basic instructions like wash your hands etc.

Disclaimer: I’m not telling you if you follow all these you won’t get or prevent you from any disease for sure but it’s not a bad idea to try our ancestor’s method to stay and live healthily. It’s neither medical advice. So make sure you’re not allergic to any specific food or ingredients (used for external application) which I’ve mentioned here.

First of all, how do we get a disease and how our immune system responds to that?

The pathogens (viruses, bacteria, fungi or any other micro-organisms) enter our body to affect us. They use our system to live and produce more pathogens which result in disease. Now, the role of our immune system to find those pathogens and destroy them before something goes worse. This is how the vaccine also works.

The publichealth.org says the vaccine trains the immune system to recognize and combat pathogens, either viruses or bacteria. To do this, certain molecules from the pathogen must be introduced into the body to trigger an immune response.

These molecules are called antigens, and they are present on all viruses and bacteria. By injecting these antigens into the body, the immune system can safely learn to recognize them as hostile invaders, produce antibodies, and remember them for the future. If the bacteria or virus reappears, the immune system will recognize the antigens immediately and attack aggressively well before the pathogen can spread and cause sickness.

Why few people are prone to get sick?

From the above statement now you may know the answer. It is due to the weak immune system and it may also depend upon their heredity.

Now you got some idea on how we are getting affected by the pathogens and how to treat them from the root? It is to boost your immune system. Let’s get into the business.

Garlic:

According to a study, Garlic is an anti-bacterial agent that can inhibit the growth of infectious agents and at the same time protect the body from the pathogens. Also, the vapour from freshly cut garlic can kill bacteria at a distance of 20 cm. So, make sure to add a few cloves of garlic to every food you eat if possible.

Ginger:

We all know that ginger is great at treating throat infections. They kill the bacteria which causes one. You can also make a ginger garlic paste to add in your cooking to enhance the flavour.

Fruits, Vegetables and Nuts:

The very first rule is to eat the fruits and vegetables which are grown in your own state or country because you get them easily with the less amount of pesticides. Also, your body adapts to the regional food easily.

Based on a study, Vitamin C contributes to immune defence by supporting various cellular functions of both the innate and adaptive immune system. Vitamin C supports the epithelial barrier function against pathogens. Here is the list of fruits, vegetables and nuts which are rich in Vitamin C.

How to stay zero waste during coronavirus?

Stay indoors:

During the days of pandemic try to stay at home and avoid crowds. It’s the best solution above all.

Face Mask:

One should not wear the same face mask for more than a day because the virus or bacteria will be found outside of your mask. But not all of us can afford it. Also, it leads to more landfills. So, try using the reusable face mask. But you’ve to wash them on a daily basis.

Handwash:

I generally wash my hands with soap or neem powder. Yeah, you heard me right. But I don’t buy the neem powder instead I make them. Since I have the opportunity to get the neem leaves directly from the tree I know they are good and free of chemicals.

Why neem?

Neem is known for its antibacterial, antimalarial, antiviral, and antifungal properties. Ancient Indians eat neem leaves to prevent them from diseases. According to winchesterhospital.org neem is also used for treating respiratory diseases. But I usually use them externally in my face mask. But due to this recent pandemic, I started to use its powder to wash my hands too.

How I use them to wash my hands?
  • I just pluck some neem leaves and sundry it till they become crispy. Then I’ll just turn them into a fine powder using my blender. Finally, I’ll store it in the airtight container.
  • I’ll take a pinch of the neem powder and rub it on my wet hands thoroughly and finish off washing my hands with normal water.

Turmeric for you and your home:

  • Turmeric is good at killing bacteria and viruses due to its anti-inflammatory properties. Ancient Indian women use turmeric on their skin in order to get rid of the germs and for other beauty remedies. You can also use them in your bathing routine. Mix a tablespoon of white turmeric (to avoid the yellow stain on your skin) with 2 tablespoons of gram flour and use this to clean my skin instead of using the soap.
  • Mop the floor not just with water but with this mixture. Mix a tablespoon of turmeric in a bucket full of water and use it to kill the germs around your house.
  • You can also use this diluted turmeric water to clean your front house.
  • Its antibacterial property helps to keep your internal system clean. So, try to add a pinch of turmeric in your cooking whenever possible.

Your very own mind:

Last but not least, your mind plays a major role here. Think positively, say that you’re healthy and have a strong immune system every morning and night. Stay happy and listen to the positive stuff rather than just listening to the news of coronavirus all day long. What you see is what you get, remember that always.
