What causes the underarms smell/ body odour?

If we get to know the reason, we can solve the problem by treating the root cause. So answering the question, the bacteria that reside on our skin break down the sweat into acids which results in the body odour. We are aware of the reason now so let’s look into some of the solutions.

How do I stop my underarms from smelling?

There are many ways out there to control our armpit smell. Some of the easy and effective ways are mentioned below.

Shave your underarms:

Shaving your underarms helps your skin to breathe and evaporate the sweat by removing the hair. This reduces the work taken by the bacteria and thus reduces the smell.

Exfoliate your underarms:

Similarly, you can get rid of the bacteria by exfoliating your underarms once a week. This controls body odour to a certain extent. The reason for exfoliating is to remove the dead skin from our body which eventually removes the bacteria.

Dry yourself:

After the shower dry yourself well with the towel because the bacteria tend to breed in the moisture. Concentrate well on the areas where you sweat more.

Healthy diet:

Our diet plays a major role in this. Foods like hot pepper, red meat and alcohol make you sweat more. Having a balanced diet helps you over here.

Water:

Drinking lots of water helps our body to flush the toxins out and thus results in less body odour.

By implementing the above steps, we can only reduce the body odour to a certain extent but we cannot get rid of it. So, let’s make our own natural homemade deodorant to fight the underarms smell.

Reusable mask

Why natural homemade deodorant?

Before going into the procedure of making our homemade deodorant we have to know why we are going for natural deodorant and not the commercial ones.

We all know that commercial deodorants come with loads of chemicals. And the role of antiperspirant is to block the sweat glands from perspiration which is not good for our health. We have to sweat in order to get rid of the toxins from our body.

Also, we can reuse our old containers to fill our homemade deodorant which reduces the trash we produce to a greater extent.

Natural Homemade Deodorant Recipe:

Ingredients:

  • Shea butter – 3 tbsp (unrefined)
  • Beeswax – 3 tbsp (unrefined)
  • Coconut oil – 2 tbsp (unrefined & melted)
  • Corn starch – 1/2 cup
  • Arrowroot powder – 1/4 cup (optional)

Benefits of using these ingredients:

Shea butter:

It doesn’t block the pores in your skin and helps the skin to breathe. Also, the antimicrobial property in the Shea butter prevents the bacteria to grow further.

The reason for using the beeswax is that it helps our deodorant to get harden. Not only that it also has some microbial properties to prevent from spreading more bacteria on our skin.

The coconut oil is a natural moisturizer and its antibacterial property get rids of the bacteria build up on our underarms. Some say it stains their clothes. That’s the reason we are using coconut oil in less quantity.

The antiperspirant property in the corn starch helps us to replace the antiperspirant spray which has harsh chemicals.

Arrowroot powder helps to absorb the moisture. And this again aids to prevent the area from bacteria build-up.

Essential oil:

We’re using the essential oil to enhance the pleasant smell of our homemade deodorant. They also help the skin to breathe.
